Owned by ABBA's Benny Andersson, the Rival Hotel is housed in a traditional building with a patio, which dates from 1937. Though it looks fairly unremarkable from the outside – somewhat resembling an office block – the interior is suffused with intriguingly retro, Art Deco design. The 99 guestrooms are appointed in a sleek contemporary style, with wooden floors, photographic blow-ups from classic Swedish films and even teddy bears to make guests feel more at home. The standard rooms measure 16-23 square meters and face a quiet inner courtyard. The en suite bathrooms are elegant, with marble floors and special details such as coloured taps. The property also includes a vintage 1940s movie theatre. Adjoining the theatre, there’s a lively, multilevel cafe and bakery that serves wonderful pastries and coffee, while on the opposite side of reception is a nice, slightly more sedate lounge. The hotel’s Bar & Bistro is open Monday to Saturday from 11.30am for good, quick food. It serves classic Swedish dishes, fine wines by the glass and hot snacks. Dinner is available six days a week, with lunch served every weekday. There’s also a period-style Art Deco bar that serves cocktails and other drinks.
